On the Other Side of the Tables

Yesterday (October 24th, 2006), the comic book artists group "V de Viñeta" (from Córdoba, Argentina), exhibited 70 original artwork pieces in the show room of the Lino Spilimbergo art school, located in the Ciudad de las Artes, Córdoba, Argentina.

The exhibition was called Re-Creando Viñetas ("re-creating panels") .

I met the "V" group recently so I had not enough time to prepare the material for the exhibition (they started in March).

But they still invited me to participate in the show by bringing my artwork samples and by drawing for the audience if someone wanted a drawing.

So this was my first time "on the other side of the tables"! That is, to be an artist, and welcome the audience. This was a very important event for me.

The theme of the exhibition was to portray, in the unique Cartoonist's style, original colored artworks of 7 different male comic characters.

The characters were (in alphabetical order): Asterix, the Eternauta, Inodoro Pereyra, Lucky Luke, Nippur, Spider-Man and Tarzan.

I brought to the show two B&W sample books of Omega Chase #1 and #2 and various drawings in a large portfolio folder.

Omega Chase is the comic book I have been doing since 2005 with Keith Dallas (writer), Meha Nathan (colorist), Egg Embry (editor), Thomas Mauer (letterer) and many other talented individuals.

The drawings in the folder (and many more) may be seen in my website at http://www.julio.ws/

Fortunatelly, I received very good comments about Omega Chase and the drawings (thanks!).

And, I had lots of fun drawing for the audience. For example, a robotic ballet dancer, and a portrait of my character Segundo, from my comic of the same name.

The quality of the drawings was very good. The audience also enjoyed tasty Argentinean "alfajores" (a type of cake), and a nice Malbec red wine.

Art exhibitions like this one help support and reach out the Argentinean 9th art form ("las historietas", that is sequential art).

Hope to see you in the next exhibition!
