Top artists frequently use a very simple technique that adds lots of power to their drawings: silhouettes.
A silhouette is a dark image outlined against a lighter background.
Silhouettes are used to effectively add mood to the artwork.
For example, if a figure is walking through a tunnel towards the reader, using a silhouette could make a much more effective drawing than doing the complete figure with all its details.
Silhouettes can be done faster than regular detailed drawings, so they're a good ally when time is short.
Sometimes you can be inventive and add white details to the silhouette to help identify the person, animal or object. For example, a logo (like the Superman "S") or a distinctive mark (like a doctor's cross).
And while they're not strictly silhouettes, regular drawings that are mostly cover in black can be as effective as silhouettes, so use them in your pages.
There's only one thing to have in mind when drawing silhouettes: they must be interpreted easily by the reader.Silhouettes must represent the person, animal or object precisely.
If the reader does not understand the silhouette, then it was poorly done.
Find good samples of silhouettes by your favorite comic book artists, study them, and then draw your own in your own comics. Have fun and good luck!
